NYC Makeup Artist Sandy Linter - Foundation Tips

It would be nice to have New York City make up artist Sandy Linter, arrive each day to ‘put on your face.’ She is a legend in the business and has the resume to prove it. From Eva Longoria to Christie Brinkley, this woman has enhanced the beauty of every face she has applied makeup to. Sandy Linter shares some super tips on foundation, the building blocks to beautiful makeup.

Okay, let’s say your skin is just about perfect. Lucky you. Then Sandy says all you need is a little concealer and blush. And don’t forget a sun-protection cream because Sandy cautions that skin cancers can form on and around the nose later on in life. But if your skin is a bit red, or pale, has uneven tone, large pores, or acne, etc., then you need to cover.

Choosing the right shade of foundation seems nearly impossible, but Sandy says you can get close. “I apply a swipe of color near the neck. On the face under the cheekbone. It has to blend into the skin, not exactly match it. But it should cover. Apply it on broken capillaries or something you need to tone down, like ruddy cheeks. See how the foundation sits on the skin.”

Most women don’t think about this, but a wonderful aspect about wearing foundation, is its ability to fight the elements like sun, wind and cold, harsh winter air. Sandy notes that foundation, even without the spf., still provides a good barrier, especially against sun damage. “And you will never regret saving your skin. It’s all about beautiful skin,” she says.

There Are A Gazillion Foundations—I’m Lost

Alright then. Liquid or cream or powder foundation? The choices appear to be endless, and that is when many women fear to even try a makeup item. But through trial and error, you can find a foundation that balances your complexion and gives you a healthy, sheer glow. For instance, I have oily skin with large pores, but Sandy says foundation can tackle a number of skin problems.

“I usually apply a liquid or cream, and then throw a powder foundation in my bag for touch-ups. That’s also what I do with models, actresses, etc. Most of the time, I use powder foundations for touch-ups, but it depends. They do work very well on oily skin. And I love working with Kevyn Aucoin's The Liquid Airbrush Foundation. With liquids, use your fingers to apply. With creams, use sponges. I use foundation brushes on oily skin. That might be a good trick for you. Armani has a great little brush. A stiff brush beats the foundation into the pores. Sounds gross, but it gives a really ‘pore-less’ finish. The Kevyn foundation is so moist that it is a waste pouring it into a sponge. I apply it with fingers, like a moisturizer.”

Don’t Forget The Blush, Either

On your way to ‘building’ a lovely face and complexion, don’t ignore the steps that follow through. Just applying a foundation or base, is not enough. You want to create a three-dimensional face--- one that features warmth, and enhances skin and bone structure. And that little secret is some blush, according to Sandy.

Whatever you do, remember to treat your skin with loving care. It’s never too late to improve the canvas you were born with. Never go to bed with makeup on. And get into a good nighttime cleansing routine. Like Sandy Linter says, ‘It’s all about beautiful skin.”

Makeup Legend Sandy Linter Shares Tips for 20s + 30s

We have had the pleasure of interviewing legendary makeup artist Sandy Linter a few times now (check our beautytiptoday.com archives). She is an extremely talented artist who has 'painted on' some of the most beautiful faces in the world.

And what we really adore about Sandy Linter is her accessibility. She never has any airs about her, and she loves to share her gazillion beauty tips.

Sandy Linter has been very busy these days as Lancome's Beauty at Every Age Ambassador, criss-crossing around, making personal appearances at Lancome boutiques and counters. She shares her makeup tips, consults on Lancome beauty products, and trains their makeup artists. In addition, she is a much sought-after makeup pro, creating the gorgeous faces of Eva Longoria, Elizabeth Hurley, and many more.

Sandy owes us a few more articles. We haven't been able to connect as of late, but we recently caught up with her in the pages of People Magazine's Dec. 2008 Special "Sexy Forever--How To Look & Feel Great At Any Age!"

Sandy Linter has some great makeup tips for women in their 20's and 30's.

In your 20's:
1. Do experiment with color
"Crazy yellow eyeshadow? You can pull it off!" at this age, Sandy told People mag. "Break all the rules."

2. Play up your lips
Sandy advises to go with the dark lipstick and super shiny glosses now, because when you get older, lips lose volume, and a deeper tone can be aging.

3. Don't skip foundation
"Even beautiful skin can benefit from it," Sandy say. "It's corrective."

In your 30's
1. Do commit to a color palette
"You should be certain about what shades flatter you at this point," Sandy explains. "You'll know whether or not purple eyeshadow works!"

2. Brighten your lipstick
Again, you can still lay on a red mouth, but stick to the sheerer shades, because the too strong color "can be aging."

3. Don't over-tweeze your eyebrows
"As you age, the hair gets thinner and finer," Sandy says. "If you over-tweeze or wax it all the time, it will never grow back."

Always, sensible and smart advice from one of makeup's very best in the biz.

Thank you, Sandy Linter.

New Maybelline Foundation Claims Color Stay All Day

Foundation is one of those love/hate makeup products. And yet, foundation really is an essential building block to one's makeup routine.

You say you don't need foundation? Think again. Professional makeup artists use it all the time to create beautiful faces for magazine covers and television appearances.

If you can claim perfect skin, which most of us on the planet do not have, then all you need is sunscreen, a little concealer under the eyes, a swipe of blush, and off you go.

But for the rest of the vast population, ladies, you need the coverage. Foundation provides balance to skin tone. Hides imperfections like shadows, redness, and pimples. Gives a little warmth to the complexion. Provides a shield against the harsh elements, especially if it is made with an SPF. And foundation is the smooth canvas on which to layer concealer, blush, shadow, liner, powder, and so on.

Today, we are taking a closer look at a new Maybelline product: Maybelline SuperStay 24 Hour Foundation ($9.99, at drugstores).

Maybelline is trying to rival Revlon's classic and popular favorite, ColorStay Foundation. ColorStay has been around for a number of years now. Many of you might recall model Cindy Crawford doing the television ads for the liquid foundation, wearing a white shirt and bragging how Revlon ColorStay lasts and lasts and never rubs off.

ColorStay is a great liquid foundation, and Maybelline hopes you think the same about their SuperStay Foundation.

We can tell you that Maybelline's SuperStay comes in a similar formula as ColorStay:

Micro-Flex formula provides 24-hour wear and No Transfer.
Withstands heat, sweat and humidity.
Oil-free, dermatogolist tested, fragrance-free.
Suitable for all skin types.

SuperStay also comes in 5 light, 5 medium, and 2 dark shades.

And that's always the big challenge---matching foundation to your face. Not easy and never perfect. Choosing the right shade of foundation seems nearly impossible, but professional makeup artist Sandy Linter says you can get close. “I apply a swipe of color near the neck. On the face under the cheekbone. It has to blend into the skin, not exactly match it. But it should cover. Apply it on broken capillaries or something you need to tone down, like ruddy cheeks. See how the foundation sits on the skin.”

For more super tips on foundation, take a look at an interview we did with the famous celebrity makeup artist Sandy Linter.

Foundation Freak-Out: When You Can't Find The Right Makeup Shade

Foundation. We love it and we hate it.

And yes, just about every girl needs some, unless your skin is almost perfect. Foundation helps to balance your complexion and give it a healthy, sheer glow.

But when you can't match the right makeup shade for your skin tone, we call that, foundation freak-out!

Surely, with all the gazillion gallons of foundation makeup out there, you would think, that finding a shade that blends evenly with your skin color would be a piece of cake.

But sadly, that isn't so. Ask any women with olive skin, or a women of color, and they will tell you, that selecting the perfect foundation match is almost impossible. The color is either too light, too dark, too pink, too ashen, and so on. Many women with darker skin color often feel left out by the gigantic cosmetics industry.

Even superstar Jennifer Hudson admits she uses 2 Mac Studio Fix Fluids, NC45 and NC55, to get a beautiful makeup base:

"I blend two together to get the perfect shade," Jennifer says.

But should we all have to work that hard, just to get a decent foundation for our face?!

Apparently, some of us have to. With our own skin tone (Mediterranean background), which falls under the light olive range, we have tossed out many bottles over the years, even after being 'matched' by a dept. store makeup pro to get the so-called right foundation color. Well, the one she gave us, wasn't a great match.

We finally settled upon Revlon's ColorStay Soft-Flex liquid foundation in Nude. For some reason, this one has been our best match, and we picked it out ourself. No, the shade isn't absolutely perfect, but it's the closest we have come to a good makeup base. And that's the key here----don't look for perfection, just a foundation that closely resembles your own unique skin tone

So then, how do we match a foundation to our face?

A famous makeup artist, Sandy Linter gave us this tip a few years ago:

“I apply a swipe of color near the neck. On the face under the cheekbone. It has to blend into the skin, not exactly match it. But it should cover. Apply it on broken capillaries or something you need to tone down, like ruddy cheeks. See how the foundation sits on the skin.”

Most women don’t think about this, but a wonderful aspect about wearing foundation, is its ability to fight the elements like sun, wind and cold, harsh winter air. Wearing foundation, even without an SPF icluded, still provides a protective barrier, especially against sun damage.

If you have to go through a few bottles of foundation just to settle on one, so be it. Our complexions go through changes in tone over the years, and maybe you need a lighter base this time around. Experiment. Don't be afraid to try another brand.

1. DO Go For The Glow!!!
Sandy says that a deeper foundation color and blush "warm up the skin and make you look younger."

2. DO Wear Natural Eye Makeup
Sandy advises that you keep eyes fresh-looking with brown eyeliner, instead of black, And don't overdose on the mascara. Don't go more than one or two coats.

Sandy says we all could benefit by putting on a little glamour. "A lot of women have it drilled into them, that less is more, but no! You still need makeup, just with a lighter touch."

NYC Makeup Artist Sandy Linter Talks Blush

Sandy Linter is a legendary makeup artist in New York City. From Eva Longoria to Christie Brinkley to Nancy Reagan, Sandy has created some of the most stunning magazine covers around the world.

Last March, Sandy applied makeup to lovely bride and cover girl Elizabeth Hurley for her marriage to businessman Arun Nayar. Check out the photo(right) of Elizbeth Hurley. Just a beautiful sample of Sandy Linter's makeup magic.

What Sandy tells celebrities and non-celebrities, is this:

If you don't like wearing too much makeup, at least put on some blush. Blush warms up the face, and enhances skin and bone structure.

Many women enjoy putting on makeup, but figure that foundation or base is enough, but it isn't.

"I hate that poured on look," Sandy says. "Just base and no blush. Or just base and powder. It's kind of strange-looking. I think women do it to look tanner. Or darker. But it's too flat. You need highlighting on the cheek. A touch of blush is necessary. Without it, it kind of looks dirty, flat, and matte."

Snooki Style Update: Red Highlights Added But Big Poof Still On

Snooki. Where do we begin....Sigh.....

Snooki, gearing up for the second season of Jersey Shore, has expanded her Snooki style and just added some pretty red highlights. But if you thought the pint-sized dynamo was going to get rid of that high-riding poof on top of her head, well, fahgeddabout it!

Snooki, who is actually Chilean by birth, was adopted by an Italian family, hence her last name of Polizzi.

We loved when Inside Edition did a make-under on 21-year-old Snooki earlier this year. Gone were the big poof, bronzer, and heavy eyeliner. Hair was pulled back elegantly and makeup was more natural, and gone were the Ed Hardy tee-shirt and hat. She looked so sophisticated. But...it didn't last long.

Some of you adore sweet Snooki's style and are giving her new auburn highlights the green light. Snooki even went on Twitter to announce her new red highlights and her visit with NYC Mayor Michael Bloomberg:

“I showed my hair poof for mayor B! He’s the man!” she tweeted.

Okay, so Snooki Polizzi is probably not going to be on the cover of Vogue or even inside its glamorous pages. anytime soon. But Snooki has a look, and it's all her own. And let's remember, Snooki is only 21. That's when it's actually alright to let it all hang loose. So let's not judge too harshly.

Expert makeup artist Sandy Linter has some beauty tips for women in their 20s that might surprise you. And Sandy Linter is a legendary makeup pro. From Christie Brinkley to Eva Longoria, Sandy has worked her magic on many famous faces.

Sandy Linter's advice:

In your 20's:
1. Do experiment with color. "Crazy yellow eyeshadow? You can pull it off!" At this age, Sandy told People mag. "Break all the rules."
2. Play up your lips. Sandy advises to go with the dark lipstick and super shiny glosses now, because when you get older, lips lose volume, and a deeper tone can be aging.
3. Don't skip foundation. "Even beautiful skin can benefit from it," Sandy say. "It's corrective."

Well, then, Snooki....go big and bad, while you can!

Do We All Really Need To Wear Makeup Every Day?

Please, dear Secretary of State, forgive us. We are not trying to make you the poster child for the harsh, cold results of NOT wearing makeup.

Yes, this is Hillary Clinton looking au naturale, with just a smidgen of berry lip gloss on during a recent working trip to India and Bangladesh. The naked face photos went viral.

In her defense, she is 64-years-old. And certainly, any woman at that age would have more wrinkles and/or sagging than a 24-year-old.

The good news----Hillary Clinton has nice volume and fullness in her face and thick eyebrows. That's a plus in our book.

And this how the Secretary of State rsponded to CNN:

"I feel so relieved to be at the stage I'm at in my life right now. Because you know if I want to wear my glasses I'm wearing my glasses. If I want to wear my hair back I'm pulling my hair back. You know at some point it's just not something that deserves a lot of time and attention. And if others want to worry about it, I let them do the worrying for a change."

Gotta love this woman! But, sorry, we think the makeup is essential. No, Mrs. Clinton doesn't have to plaster it on, BUT, she needs the basics. She has an extremely important public government position, so all eyes are upon her.

We've all heard, 'Less is more,' when it comes to makeup for older women.

Legendary makeup artist Sandy Linter says otherwise:

"No, that translates into using nothing. I see a lot of older women in their 50s, 60s and 70s with no makeup on. That just makes you look old and washed out".

Here's some makeup advice for women OVER 50 from Sandy:

3. DON'T Stop Wearing Makeup
Sandy says we all could benefit by putting on a little glamour. "A lot of women have it drilled into them, that less is more, but no! You still need makeup, just with a lighter touch."

4. DON'T Powder Your Cheeks
Sandy says you don't need to go there, or it can look weird. "It makes you look like you're wearing a mask."

Now, if only the Secretary of State could have a traveling makeup artist like Sandy Linter, then we wouldn't be having this cosmetics conversation.

When Bad Beauty/Style Happens To Nice People

Well, where can we start?

Just a couple of recent photos showing Ivana Trump, the former wife of business mogul Donald Trump, out on the town meeting up with her younger boyfriend.

We are all for the cougar playfulness BUT----the childish blue wig belongs on younger Amanda Bynes (27), NOT on a 64-year-old woman of power and status.
If anyone saw their mother in this, they would be embarrassed. Poor Ivanka Trump, her daughter. Don't even get us started on the black leather jumpsuit and blue feather boa.

Famous makeup artist Sandy Linter says you CAN try all the wacky beauty/style ideas when you're very young:

In your 20's:
Do experiment with color
"Crazy yellow eyeshadow? You can pull it off!" at this age, Sandy told People mag. "Break all the rules."

When you're OVER 40, well, try to stay within the beauty speed limit.

In your 50s + beyond....Sandy has these smart beauty tips :

1. DO Go For The Glow!!! Sandy says that a deeper foundation color and blush "warm up the skin and make you look younger."

2. DO Wear Natural Eye Makeup Sandy advises that you keep eyes fresh-looking with brown eyeliner, instead of black, And don't overdose on the mascara. Don't go more than one or two coats.

4. DON'T Powder Your Cheeks Sandy says you don't need to go there, or it can look weird. "It makes you look like you're wearing a mask."

Help Me Get Gorgeous In 5 Minutes

Welcome to the 5 minute face. Yes, you can apply makeup within five, tiny minutes and achieve a polished and pretty look. And all you need to have---are 5 beauty items. So stop screaming that you don't have even 5 minutes to waste. Help is on the way.

1. Foundation. Yes, we all need a little, unless your complexion is just about perfect. That means zero undereye circles, zero uneven pigment, zero zits, zero lines and wrinkles, etc. Our makeup legend friend, Sandy Linter, says that we all need some coverage for those reasons. And Sandy says that foundations usually offer some amount of SPF, so you are protecting your skin from the elements when you wear foundation, be it liquid, cream, powder, or mineral.
Try: Revlon ColorStay Makeup with SoftFlex ($12.99) ColorStay comes in 12 shades and in Normal/Dry or Combination/Oily. Halle Berry is said to be a big fan of ColorStay Makeup. Okay, she is a spokesmodel for Revlon, but I believe her.

2. Eyeshadow. We could all benefit from a little color on the eyes, especially when it's classic and pretty. Go for a neutral shade and apply all over the lid.
Try: Nars Cream Single Eyeshadow in Paper Tiger (Toffee, $21). This is a nice, soft, brown-beige shade and complements most eye colors. A long-lasting cream to powder formula.

3. Mascara. Need we say more? Mascara is probably one of the more important beauty items to always include in your makeup plan on a daily basis. Why? Simply put, mascara opens up the eyes. You don't have to put on 30 coats. Just a couple and you will see the difference that long lashes and wide eyes can make.
Try: CoverGirl Lash Blast Volume Blaster Mascara ($7.99) This mascara is a great lash-plumper and comes in 4 intensities: Black. Brown. Black Brown. Very Black.

4. Blush. Cheek color. According to Sandy Linter, it's THE most important cosmetic to use every day. "It shows off your bone structure and gives your face depth and warmth." Blush gives you a healthy glow. A sheer bronzer can also give you the same healthy look, but with more of a tan and can be swiped all over---forehead, nose, chin, and cheeks. Bronzers come in a big variety of hues. But remember to keep it sheer and not too dark.
Try: N.Y.C. New York Color-Color Wheel Mosaic Powder in Pink Cheek Glow ($4.99). These mosaic wheels come in 6 pretty palettes and give brightness to underlying skintone. Each wheel contains 4 shades, but when you apply to your face, the 4 combine into one color hue. An amazing beauty item at a great price.

5. Lipstick/Gloss. The finishing touch. You don't need to waste time lining your lips. And if you can't be bothered with lipstick, a gloss is very quick to apply to your lips. Lip color comes in so many, many colors. You can go neutral, light, or stay in the pink family for a classic look.
Try: Prescriptives Rain Gloss in Watery Melon ( $18.50). A soft, sheer pink coral shade. Light and healthy, not a heavy gloss. Lips look 'dewy,' as the Prescriptives people say.

There, you're gorgeous in 5 minutes!

Rosie Jane Cosmetics Give You Natural Beauty

Many women don't wear makeup because they are intimidated by it. They don't know exactly how to apply cosmetics, or which beauty items to buy. Some women swear they don't have even 5 minutes to spare, and some don't want to feel like they are wearing a mask. All great points, but there is an easier way to put on makeup that gives you natural beauty.

Legendary makeup artist Sandy Linter, has always given us some wonderful beauty tips. Remember this: blush. According to Sandy, it is the most important makeup to wear, even if it's the only beauty product you apply to your skin. Why blush? It warms up the skin, giving you a healthy glow and enhancing your cheekbones and bone structure. It gives your face a 3-dimensional appearance, in that it isn't flat like just wearing foundation.

Stephen Moleski, west coast makeup artist phenom, also agrees with Sandy Linter, but he would apply a neutral bronzer on the cheek area, for the same reasons.

And Rosie Jane Johnston agrees. Rosie Jane was born in Australia, and she, too, is a well-respected makeup artist. Rosie Jane has traveled the globe and found that women share one thing in common---"a lack of confidence applying makeup."

Rosie Jane began developing her own line of cosmetics that bear her name. She started out with a blush, Rosie Jane Cheek Gloss ($24, http://www.rosiejanecosmetics.com/.) And she, too, suggests that blush is the beginning of a beautiful canvas. "It's all you need to brighten up the face and give a healthy glow."

Here's the simplicity with Rosie Jane Cosmetics. Her blush comes in 3 shades:
Poppy: deep berry that gives cheeks a subtle, sexy glow
Marigold: golden bronzer for a natural glow
Rose: for a youthful, rosy glow

None of her cosmetics are harsh or strong. Rosie Jane says her makeup was developed for all types of skin and ages. There are 3 color palettes to choose from for each beauty product she sells. In addition to the cheek glow, Rosie Jane also sells----eye hints, and lip dew. And her 4th newest product is the eye defines, which is an eyeliner for a P.M. makeup look.

All you need are 3 Rosie Jane beauty items to create a fresh-faced natural beauty: blush, eye shadow, and lip gloss. It's quick, easy, and you look pretty after you're done.

Dollface (light pink)
Exposed (nude)

Natural Beauty (muted strawberry red)
Tipsy (coral)

Blush
should ALWAYS be a part of your makeup routine. We NEVER used to wear it. Sure, we put on foundation, concealer, eyeliner, mascara, eyeshadow, lipstick, the works. And yet, we didn't think we needed blush. That's until we interviewed Sandy Linter, one of the greatest all-time professional makeup artists around.

Now we wear blush every day, and it really makes sense.

Avon Cream Blush: Quick, Pretty, and Easy

Tired of looking drained out by the frosty, dry air? We could all use a little glow these winter days. And blush is one of the best beauty items to reach for, even when you don't have time for anything else makeup-wise.

Blush gives you an instant warmth and depth to your face and bone structure, at least that is what the famous makeup artists we have interviewed here at BeautyTipToday like to tell us. New York City's legendary celeb artist Sandy Linter, says that just foundation alone looks 'weird' and too one-dimensional. And that a little cream blush is pretty and brings out one's features.

Today, we are looking at Avon's cream cheek color. This blush will paint a rosy, natural glow. And it comes in a tube form and simple to apply: quick, pretty, and easy. And it's called Be Blushed Cheek Color ($8, at avon.com, or from your Avon lady).

Available in 8 soft and natural shades. And this product is very blendable and won't cause break-outs.

Makeup artist-to-the-stars Holly Carter, told People StyleWatch that she loves Avon's Be Blushed Cheek Color in Icy Petal. Holly says the cream base is long-lasting, delivers a fresh glow.

Icy Petal it is. Soft and sheer.
